SBI Donates Rs. 8.6 Cr to Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation

PR Newswire | 13 Feb, 2015
BANGALORE: SBI is not only the largest bank in the country but also a leading name in the banking space for fulfilling its Corporate Social Responsibility. The bank keeps aside 1% of its profit for CSR activities. During the financial year 2012-13 as against the target of Rs. 117 crore, the bank spent Rs. 123 crore and during 2013-14 the bank spent Rs. 148 crore as against a target of Rs. 147 crore under various CSR activities throughout the country.

As one of its major CSR activities, State Bank of India donated Rs. 8.60 crore (Rupees eight crore sixty lacs only) to Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation (SCF) to procure PET CT Scanning equipment.

SCF, Bangalore, a not-for-profit trust founded in 2008, is exclusively helping cancer patients to receive optimal treatment at affordable cost. This is the first charitable cancer hospital in the country to provide state-of-the-art equitable treatment to all cancer patients including free treatment to the poorest. SCF is recognized as a leading tertiary cancer hospital.

The SCF has been established:

To provide state-of-the-art treatment to all cancer patients at affordable costs irrespective of caste, creed, and socio-economic status.
To offer free treatment to the poorest and set aside 10% of beds and services for this purpose.
To reduce the incidence of cancer in rural areas and also to detect cancer in early stages through various interventional initiatives.
To make the treatment affordable by reducing the basic cost of treatment and enable the patients to obtain state-of-the-art contemporary treatment.
To provide medicines at highly subsidized costs.
To develop a Centre of Research under eminent scientists and medical professionals so as to drive the research activities towards reducing the cancer burden in the society, improving the treatment standards, and by academically remaining in the cutting edge of science.
To establish a Pediatric Cancer Centre of International Standards.

Need for the equipment:

SCF is having a exclusive 60-bedded Pediatric Cancer Centre with provision of individualised care and facility for every child; this effort perhaps, must be the first of its kind in the country. Apart from this, SCF has a large Oncologic Research Facility within the hospital building. They have also embarked on setting up a 580-bedded cancer hospital.

The daily increase in number of patients stands as a testimony to their quality treatment and also the lower fees they are charging for their services, compared to other hospitals in the city, (this is exclusive of the free treatment provided by the hospital). With the procurement of PET CT scan equipment, the hospital can carry-out comprehensive tests under one roof which helps the hospital for early diagnosing the problem. Above all, this will provide a great relief to patients who are now being referred by SCF to other hospitals for scanning.

Assistance to SCF under CSR in the past:

State Bank of India has donated Rs. 19.41 lacs to SCF for purchasing a Mobile Cancer Detection Bus (Tata Starbus, Marcopolo - Airconditioned) during the FY 2013-14. This bus is under use for early detection of cancer in the rural areas and the vehicle is branded with the bank's name/logo. This has helped the SCF to detect cancer early and provide free treatment to poor cancer patients from the rural areas.
