Lyoness Child and Family Foundation Opens Nelson Mandela School

PR Newswire | 19 Mar, 2013
GRAZ, Austria: With an emotional speech Luvuyo Hlanganani Mandela opened the "Nelson Mandela No-Moscow Primary School" in the South African village of Qunu on 15th March. "To offer the children in Nelson Mandela's birthplace a proper school education is very important to me and our family. We would like to thank the Lyoness Child & Family Foundation for its social commitment in South Africa," Nelson Mandela's great-grandson emphasised in the presence of international guests, including Meme Mable Kgagara, Nelson Mandela's assistant, Hubert Freidl, CEO Lyoness Nina Passegger, Director of the Child & Familiy Foundation, as well as representatives of the South African Ministry of Education.

In Nelson Mandela the Lyoness Child & Family Foundation has found a famous patron and name giver for the school. The 94-year-old winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and former South African president has always been committed to children and their right to education. That is why the Mandela family has been supporting the school project of the Child & Family Foundation in South Africa since the beginning of the project in July 2012. "Qunu still is an extremely poor region and education is an effective tool for the children living here to break the cycle of poverty," Garça Machel, Nelson Mandela's wife, acknowledges the importance of the new school in that region.

The "Nelson Mandela No-Moscow Primary School" has been realised within only nine months. All financial means were provided by the Lyoness Child & Family Foundation. The modern school building will replace the desolate previous building from now on and provides an adequate learning environment for about 228 children. The premises include seven classrooms and sanitary facilities, a nursery, two handcraft rooms, a computer room, a library and a new play and sports ground.
