Samsung SDI, a division of Samsung Group specializing in battery and electronic materials production, announced on Thursday the appointment of Choi Joo-sun, the current head of Samsung Display, as its new CEO as part of a broader leadership restructuring within the group.

Choi, aged 61, commenced his career as an engineer within a memory chip development team at Samsung Electronics before advancing into management positions. He has held the CEO position at Samsung Display since late 2022. Recognized for his technical acumen and leadership capabilities, Choi has significantly contributed to enhancing the technological edge of semiconductors and fostering growth in the display sector, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.

The company expressed confidence in Choi's ability to drive innovation and enhance corporate value at Samsung SDI, leveraging his extensive experience and leadership skills.

In a related development, Samsung Display has elevated Vice President Yi Chung to the role of president and CEO, succeeding Choi. Yi, a veteran in display technology, has played a pivotal role in the advancements of LCD and OLED technologies during his time at both Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display.

Furthermore, Samsung Global Research, the group's strategic think tank, has launched a dedicated management consulting office aimed at assisting affiliated companies in enhancing their organizational and operational efficiencies. Choi Yoon-ho, the current CEO of Samsung SDI, has been appointed to lead this new initiative.

Additionally, Samsung unveiled its new leadership on Wednesday, emphasizing a strategic focus on the semiconductor sector to bolster its future competitiveness. Jun Young-hyun, vice chairman and head of the device solutions (DS) division, has been appointed CEO and will also oversee the memory business and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, as stated by the company. The new CEO is set to directly manage the memory business unit to further strengthen technological competitiveness.

Han Jin-man, who previously served as the executive vice president and president of Device Solutions America, has been elevated to the role of president, where he will oversee the foundry division, currently facing significant financial losses amounting to trillions of won. Additionally, Samsung Electronics has established a new position of chief technology officer for its foundry operations, appointing Nam Seok-woo, the former president and head of FAB Engineering and Operations, to this role. This recent organizational restructuring has impacted a total of nine officials, with seven individuals being assigned to new positions.
