Recently, industry body FICCI and social networking site Facebook have announced a partnership to provide Indian SMEs a platform to harness the power of the Internet and social media. With growing numbers of small and medium enterprises continuing to adopt social media marketing, there is no doubt that such a development is welcome. In today's competitive market, I believe every SME should be a part of the social media phenomenon.
It is a well-known fact that social networking websites can provide a great opportunity to link up with millions of Internet users, making communication possible in an easy, efficient and effective way, regardless of geographical locations. At present, there are millions of Internet users across the globe, and this leads to the understanding of the immense possibilities for businesses on online social networks.
The best thing about social media marketing is that it can turn communication into conversation. In other words, you move from indirect to direct communication to share and receive feedback, and directly communicate with your current and prospective customers. Social media websites are fun and people like to crowd in because they enjoy themselves there. That is where the opportunity lies for a small business to expand its marketing.
Today, SME owners are increasingly using social media tools for creating industrial sector related communities, organizing events, getting others help to promote brands and products, and doing customer research, but surprisingly there are still many laggards in the sector who are sceptical about social media's effectiveness in building business. Usually they complain that results are flat against expectation.
But I think there is much more to gain than lose from social media marketing and its effectiveness largely depends on how we handle it. For many SMEs, marketing comes second to sales. This is a wrong approach, particularly when one is using online social media the real power of which lies not in generating sales but to collect important market insights, improve customer loyalty, and facilitates community building around a brand. So, social media should be treated like a vehicle and not a destination. It should be harnessed into a firm's existing marketing infrastructure.
Another area where SMEs often go wrong when it comes to social media is that they fail to maintain consistency in daily operations. To succeed in social media marketing, it is not enough to take the first leap but also to put consistent effort. In addition, you must understand why you are using social media and make sure that you are using it correctly. There must be defined goals. Rest assured that social media will take your marketing to new heights.

It is insightful of the author to suggest a way for SMEs to approach sales and marketing with the paradigm of social networking in mind. Community building around a brand, however, can work only in certain segments. A large segment of SMEs may not find users willing to discuss their particular product: say PVC pipes or Cement admixtures on a social networking site such as Facebook. That in fact leaves a clue for other networking sites to emerge that embrace real life problems and not just vacation photo sharing.

Social Media and Tiny, cootage and small industries

Marketing is the permanent problem with these units. Middleman dictates them raises their price and make them dance to their tune, Mail order business was the only hope but informing customers is another head ache. While trekking the villages of north Bengal I have located these house wives who can make items which has international markets. Discussing with agri and horti department I find that more than 10,000 medical, cosmetic and kitchen products are groing i bushes. These if commercially exploited will give income to home to home ladies. There is a sheep in the uphills of Himalayas whose milk has contains medical properties which needs to be tapped. In fishing industries even there are a huge scopes which the scientists in this departments have discovered written projects and kept in the shelf for decoration. College students on the other hand in their project work has successfully experimented electrical gadgets. It is lost as the reports landed in dust bin. These findings should be available in the net at least. Further due to lack of computer knowledge in remote villages the grads and post grads are sitting directionless. They need to be taught net operation only other than computer programmes. No NGO is interested to do this free service. I have appealed to philanthropists to provide me 4 computers even if it is old so that I can train them to do so. Here also no one came forward. Out of desperation I am now moving into villages with my laptop to open their mind.

We understand the importance of this very dynamic media, and have been working to create platforms for SMEs. Our Social Lite Package actually helps SMEs to build a page, do branding, manage and monitor activities and most importantly analyze activities and user profile, thereby giving them an exact understanding on the effect of Social Media Marketing.
