A recent study reveals that less than 6 percent of Indian MSMEs with access to personal computers advertise online. It is shocking why the sector is so much unaware of the benefits of using online advertising, which is, needless to say, cheaper, faster and capable of reaching more target audience as compared to traditional media.

I think one of the reasons for MSMEs' lack of awareness lies in the fact that most of them are run by first generation entrepreneurs who are -- there's not an iota of doubt -- hardworking and have an entrepreneurial spirit, but most of them are lagging behind in many areas, which need to be taken care of in this modern day business environment. Online advertising is certainly one of these areas.

There is nothing new to say that hasn't already been said about the benefits of online advertising but here I want to reiterate that Indian MSMEs could benefit a lot from that revolutionary medium - the Internet. Online advertising can help them to withstand the onslaught of competition by enhancing their market share both within and outside the country.

There is a common misconception among many small industry players that online advertising is suitable only for exporting firms to overcome the disadvantage of being small in size and reach the global market. For others, which generate revenue from the local market, this is not required. But I think that online advertising is essential for every modern day business to create greater acceptance, strengthen the brand, and gain market shares from competitors.

Apart from online advertising, Indian MSMEs need to go also for other Internet technology tools like electronic direct mail and digital newsletter. In addition, websites and online directory listings can help them a lot to pull prospective buyers with rational effort and cost. It hardly matters what sector you're in, whether you're small or big -- given the evolution of the Internet, every business should learn to effectively use the Internet and explore the benefits of online advertising.

What is online
Claude Bothello | Thu Dec 8 04:36:20 2011
Sir, What exactly is online advertising????? We have 1.2 billion Indians who do not have a decent meal and a shelter above the head. How do you reach these Indians with your Charade of online advertising. To go online one needs a computer or something similar and for heaven sake for online advertising you need a brand entity before you even think of. So online advertising is meant for those with some cash in their pants.

I read your editorial on the above topic. As you said there is lot of advantages with internet and this depends on how you use it. My self I am Ravi Chandra working in MSME - Development Institute, Hyderabad. We conduct Entrepreneurship Development Programmes to encourage youth to take up Self employment activity. Not only this we conduct Management Development Programmes for the benefit of Owners and Employees of SME Sector. In this regard I would like to know whether you can associate with our institute in conducting a programme on benefits of online advertising to SME units. If you can depute any of your executives from your Hyderabad office I can discuss with him about the programme. I hope we can do some work, which will be beneficial to SME units.

interest into online advertisement for their future growth.
Sirsendu Banerjee | Wed Dec 7 08:44:41 2011
Yes, Its a shocking matter. Moreover, if we enter into to fact we will find too many online users who use computer or laptop daily but their attachment with online is more shocking-- In the day time of business they used to search other irrelevant sites hours after hours. Unfortunately these all users are even businessman. Its a disease Or we can say "addiction".. So, Now time has come to discuss openly with this segment people or businessman to increase their interest into online advertisement for their future growth. So that in working time at least few hours he can provide his effort to understand the online marketing for his small/ medium/ big business. In eastern India market I have checked that people/ businessman have money but the investment of money is a question mark. Obviously its not for all businessman. People are there who are investing money very intelligently but many persons are doing wrong investment. In my write up I am just targeting those people who all are still doing wrong in online marketing aspect. Otherwise my respect for all businessman who are really using online to market their product or brand. Thank you.

Its not that Indian MSMEs don't require items and they are not in need of knowing prices of such items. But the idea of online advertising puts them off as some sites ask for so much verifications from concerned individuals that it puts them off to advertise online. It would be much better if the quotations or verifications were limited and to the point and sent via e-mails to the concerned individuals.
