After long intense arguments on whether the Indo-US nuclear deal would be an equivalent of selling the country's independence and prestige, the word is out and perhaps all apprehensions have been put to rest - India can now realise its dream to produce secure, reliable and clean energy to fuel its industrial sector and thus maintain its economic growth.
This came after the 45-nation nuclear suppliers group (NSG) rightly approved the US-India nuclear deal thus marking India's entry into the global nuclear business.
All said and done, the India-US nuclear deal invariably has to translate into economics, commerce, trade, development and FDI.
It should open up business opportunities for Indian companies and the private sector too. Now that some of the nuclear facilities are exclusively in the civilian sphere as was negotiated with the US in the deal, the participation of private players can indeed bring in superior project management. I strongly believe private players should be allowed to enter into areas like equipment supply, maintenance, repair services, etc.
The government will need to amend the Atomic Energy Act of 1962 so as to permit private sector companies to enter the domain. The clause that allows only those companies with a 51 percent government stake to enter the sector too has to be done away with time.
Having said and done all that, most importantly, we need to ensure that we should also not divert our attention away from our real development needs in sustainable agriculture, education, healthcare, housing, sanitation and roads. We should not also distract ourselves from developing clean energy sources, such as wind and solar power.
The journey has just begun and it's a long way from our ultimate destination. With caution and resolve we will reach there too...no doubt about that.

You are right. Its really going to be a landmark for India inc. But how quick shall this government take steps to amend the act as their period is at the tip. And shall we believe if a new govt other than congress comes and that would pave further developments for the Nuclear Industy of India.

TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE QUALITY OF EXISTING GOVERNMENT, I DO NOT SEE ANY SERIOUS FACTORS OF CHANGES TAKING PLACE IN THE POWER SECTOR.
THE SHORTFALL IN INDIAN NEED OF POWER IS NOT DUE TO NON-AVALABILITY OF RESOURSE BUT CREATED BY THE POLITICIANS. WE HAVE ALL THREE RESOURCE FOR POWER LIKE, HYDEL, THERMAL AND IN ADDITION NUCLEAR. THE DISTRIBUTION OF POWER IS NOT CENTRALISED AND GIVEN TO STATE GOVERNMENTS TO ENABLE THE POLICY MAKERS TO HAVE A VESTED INTEREST.
THE NERTY OF ENRON IS A EXAMPLE. THE SHARAD PAWAR AND FOLLOWED BY MUNDE AND BAL THAKERY WERE THE BENEFICIERIES OF THIS PROJECT. THERE WAS PLAN TO HAVE A LONGTERM OF IMPORTS OF GAS TO FEED THIS PLANT WHICH WAS EXPENSIVE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE KICKBACKS OF THESE POLITICIANS.
THE FATE OF THE SAME IS OPEN STORY AS ON DATE. TODAY ALSO MAHARASHTRA GOVERNMENT IS MAKING ARTIFICIAL SCARCITY TO MAKE A GROUND FOR REVIVAL OF THIS PROJECT.
HOPE THAT, THE NUCLEAR DEAL WILL ATLEAST HELP THE NEEDY AND WILL NOT HAVE COFFIN RESERVED ON LONGTERM BASIS BY THESE POLITICIANS RUNING THE DRAMA AND AFFAIRS.
NANO PROJECT IS THE LATEST EXAMPLE.

I do not think that nuclear is the answer to the energy shortage in India. It is very costly in terms of setting up the plant, in maintaining the facility up to safety standards as time goes by and in waste disposal. I believe that funds should be spent rather on Geothemal, wind, solar and ocean sources as these are truly clean sources. As nuclear plants age, their structures become unsafe. This has been the case in the past and some of the other countries are tending to shy away from this technology. There have been great arguments over this technology in Germany and England though France has accepted it to a large degree. Spain is making great efforts to develope solar potential. Portugal is trying to enable wave energy to power its country and also hopes to have enough energy later on to export (through the Portugal-Spanish grid) electricity to other countries. There is no reason that India could not also develop wave power as there must be sites along the coastal regions that could be used. Also, Raser has modular Geothermal hot water units (450 Kw size) that could be used either with hot water produced by Geothermal or by vacuum tube technology. This last technology has proven to be the best for heating water and may prove an excellent working partner with Geothermal double loop heat transfer units. Geothermal wells could also serve to store heat energy. There are many ways to go other than nuclear which should be considered for India.

dear sir
i realy appreciate your proposals. From the time of nehru itself, India opted always for outdated technoligy dumped from all over the globe. Including defence deals of china. This could be done becuase of our ministers were saleble commodities and had least patriotism. As you have rightly said, the nuclear option for power is getting outdated and found very expensive and hazardous on long run. Therefore these foreign companies target our ministers and try to despose of what ever remains with them and come out of their economic crisis. Enron was one of them earlier.
A country where the president is appointed by a bar tender girl of Italy and sponsered by a Agriculture Minister least bothered about his portfolio than the Cricket and supported by a old man always thinks of regional politics nothing can change.

Dear Sir,
The Nuclear deal is for the long term benefits of electricity consumers due to increasing trend of electricity cost. The N Deal will certainly will maitain cost of electrical energy from Rs3 to 4 per
unit in long term also. The low cost of electricity will maitain low inflation. The economic growth rate shall be maitained at 9 to 10% in coming years which certainly increase per capita income therby prospority of Indian public. The foregn investment will increase, causing more tax collection and development works. This deal will certainly make India a developed country in next 10 Years.

DEAR CHANDRA
AS A BONAFIDE CITIZEN OF THIS COUNTRY I ALSO ANTICIPATE THE SAME. YOU HAVE TO COME TO MUMBAI AND SEE THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND PATHATIC CONDITIONS OF ROADS. CONTARACT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO RELIANCE FOR MAKING METRO RAILWAYS FROM VERSOVA TO GHATKOPAR. HARDLY 50 PEOPLE TRAVEL PER DAY BETWEEN THESE POINTS. THE INTENTION OF THE GOVERNMENT IS ONLY TO FAVOUR A CORPORATE HOUSE WHO IS TAKING CARE OF THE MINISTERS INVOLVED. EVERY YEAR, MUMBAI SPENDS TAX PAYERS MONEY AROUND 500 CRORE DURING MONSOON FOR LAST 40 YEARS AND THE CONDITION IS SAME. THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE THE SAFETY MEASURES OF NUCLEAR REACTORS ETC IN THIS COUNTRY. CONGRESS HAD CAME WITH MANY 20 SUTRI KARAYKRAMS AND GRABI HATO SLOGANS. THEY COULD PROVIDE NOTHING MORE THAN THE CORRUPTION. ALL THE BEST
