Exports of coir and coir products from the country touched Rs 804 crore during 2009-10, 15 percent more than the Rs 700-crore target for the fiscal set by the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Volume-wise, 2,94,508.05 tonnes of coir and its products were exported in 2009-10, up by 47.31 percent from the previous fiscal when the outbound-shipments were 1,99,924.94 tonnes.

In value terms, the growth is 25.64 percent. In 2008-09, exports were worth Rs 639 crore.

Reacting to the export figures, the Coir Board said that the achievement comes in the backdrop of global recession and its continuing impact on the country's foreign trade in diverse spheres.

The Coir Board Chairman, V.S. Vijayaraghavan said that the Board was taking all necessary steps to secure higher export incentives for coir at par with jute products which, if achieved, would take the country's coir export trade to still higher levels in the years to come.

During the fiscal year 2009-10, 31 showrooms and sales depots belonging to Coir Board sold coir products amounting to Rs 140.6 million, which was an all-time high and a little more than the set target of Rs 140 million for the period in consideration.

Among over 100 countries, where India exports coir, the USA continued to be the largest market accounting for 35 percent of exports of Indian coir products.

During the last fiscal, non-traditional products such as coir pith, coir fibre, PVC-tufted mats and curled coir achieved positive growth but traditional products such as handloom mats and handloom matting showed either negative growth or stagnation

The Coir Board expressed concern over declining exports of traditional products and emphasized on infusion of measures like technology upgradation and higher export subsidies to boost sales of coir handloom products.
