Powerloom textile exporters in the country need to look for new markets to step up exports, which are set to increase faster in the coming days due to the introduction of newer machinery, said Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) recently.

The powerloom textiles sector needs to look for new markets for exports, such as Latin America, New Zealand and Japan among others, told PDEXCIL Executive Director, Smita Bhardwaj reporters on the sidelines of a press conference on developments in powerloom sector organised by the Chamber of Textile Trade and Industry (COTTI) in Kolkata.

Powerloom textiles worth more than Rs. 44,000 million have been exported to countries such as US, France, Germany, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Italy, according to official data given by the industry body.

Outlining challenges and growth witnessed by the sector during the last few years, she said "Powerloom exports grew by about 12 percent in 2008-09. ... In 2009-10, however, there was some impact on exports due to the global recession. Though the exact figures are yet to be arrived at, but on a month-on-month basis, exports dropped by about four-to-five percent."

The situation had, however, improved and exports would pick up soon, she said.

Powerloom textiles worth more than Rs. 44,000 million have been exported to countries such as US, France, Germany, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Italy, according to official data given by the industry body.

The official added that PDEXCIL has been working on developing a cluster approach to train the labourers in the industry.
