The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), the apex body for Indian jute mills, urged the government to impose immediate ban on raw jute exports to ensure domestic availability of the raw material.

In a letter to the Textiles Secretary, Rita Menon, IJMA has recently sought intervention of the textile ministry to restrict raw jute exports on the lines of the existing restrictions in raw cotton exports.

The government decided to halt cotton exports from April 19 to ensure adequate availability of raw cotton for the domestic industry.

IJMA cited that exports of raw jute to countries such as Pakistan, China and Vietnam has created a major problem to the domestic jute mills.

According to industry estimates, approximately 73,000 bales of raw jute were exported during April-October 2009 to countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

The industry body also demanded suspension of all mandatory pre-shipment registration of raw jute and jute waste exports, if any, for an indefinite period, to overcome the problem of artificial shortage and rising raw jute prices.

IJMA also alleged that clandestine exports are taking place through various ports in the country and also through the porous borders of Nepal and Bangladesh.
