The development of Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) in the North East region is a priority area under the KVI sector, said Sushri Kumud Joshi, Chairperson, Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in the capital on Tuesday.

Joshi stated this after inaugurating the 'Uttar Poorva Khadi Gramodyog Mela' organized by the North East Zone of KVIC at Dilli Haat, New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion the Chairperson complimented the organizers for organizing such a good Mela and said that the Special Exhibition would enable the participants to find new marketing avenues by not only affecting a sizeable retail sale, but also by booking bulk orders from wholesalers and sourcing agencies in order to make it a grand success.

Every year exhibitions of different levels are being organized in order to promote and open better market avenues for the KVI products in the North East Zone.

For 2009-10 KVIC has sanctioned two 'Uttarpurva Khadi Gramodyog Mela' to be organized outside the Zone, out of which one was inaugurated at Dilli Haat, New Delhi on Tuesday and the other one will be organized during 2010-11 at Kolkata.

The North East region produces one of the world's finest varieties of woven Endi, Muga and Pat Silk fabrics. The handicrafts for which this region is equally famous are also mostly made in village homes from Jute, Wood, Cane & Bamboo etc. Around 17,000 spinners and weavers are engaged in Khadi production in the Zone out of which the lion's share is of Assam i.e. around 14,000 artisans.

During 2008-09, the Khadi production increased by 33 percent in comparison to previous year, to Rs. 1007.54 lakhs against Rs. 760.58 lakhs in 2007-08. Similarly sale has also increased from Rs. 687.99 lakhs in 2007-08 to Rs. 990.91 lakhs in 2008-09.

For 2009-10 the performance has already crossed the previous year's achievement. In order to achieve rapid expansion of KVI program in this zone untiring efforts are being made to enroll new institutions under the fold of KVIC and the response is encouraging. Already five new institutions have been enlisted under KVIC and more proposals are under process.

Khadi & Village Industries products have great demand on account of their eco-friendly character and natural base.

The Mela offers a wide range of products including exquisite bamboo and cane crafts, furniture, exclusive munga, endi silk sarees, dress materials, Naga shawls and variety of handicraft items from KVI Sector.
