As part of its ongoing commitment to the Indian Handicrafts sector, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) is organizing a three-day Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Sourcing Summit, which is being attended by over 550 participants, covering various aspects of the trade and industry, started at the India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida, from Thursday.

This summit would cover the  three main segments relating to Packaging – Form, Function & Appeal, Trend Forecast & Visual Merchandising and Retail Market Potential for Home & Textiles Vision 2015.

The symposium on Packaging – Form, Function & Appeal will discuss the issues of cost effective package, value addition through packaging and forms and norms for packing as packaging is a very important marketing strategy to glamorize the products in order to attract the consumer’s attention.

A 'added value' concept, the right packaging can save your damage costs, enhance the theme of your merchandise, add to the brand value and attribute much more to the product shelf in today’s changing times.

The symposium on Trend Forecast & Visual Merchandising will dominate to trends for 2011 – recommended for display at IHGF (autumn) and Visual Communication – facets of optimal space management as planning a product line with the intelligent use of raw material, designs and carefully analysed market demand precedes the various stages of production, the perfect presentation helps the finished goods to score well among buyers.

"Keeping in mind, the Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (Autumn) and other EPCH trade events, leaders in fashion from reputed institutes would make enriching presentations and be a part of the brain storming session at this symposium," said Raj Kumar Malhotra, Chairman, EPCH..

The symposium on Retail Market Potential for Home & Textiles- Vision 2015 will mainly discuss on Indian retail markets – past, present and future, mapping the current retail market of handicrafts, developing a strategic retail market launch plan and strategies for operating in competitive markets as the Indian retail market is the first largest retail destination globally.

"With rising consumer demand and greater disposable income, the US$400 billion Indian retail sector is clocking an annual growth rate of 30 per cent. India’s overall retail sector is expected to rise to US$833 billion by 2013 and to US$1.3 trillion by 2018, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10 per cent," Mr Malhotra added.

"Realizing that the industry requires a lot of inputs on various facets of its working, this 3 days contact building programme, would cover a wide spectrum of industry issues through various events, conducted by experts in their respective spheres," said Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director of EPCH.

The speakers at the symposiums include panelists from Packaging Institutes, industry and trade, representatives of Design Institute, NCDPC and buying houses, Eminent personalities of Trade and Industry from the Retail Sector are also  deliberating at the meet.

After feeling the heat of the global economic slowdown in the last two years, Handicrafts exports have registered an increase of 6.55 per cent at Rs 8,718.94 crore during 2009-10 up by Rs 538.28 crore as against Rs 8,183 crore in 2008-09 in rupee terms and registered a growth of 1.80 per cent in dollar terms at 1,830.23 million dollar during the year up by 32.35 million dollars compared to last year, according to the provisional export data recently released by the EPCH.
