Passenger car sales in India rose 20.08 percent in March to 155,600 units compared to 129,585 units a year ago, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Friday showed.

Meanwhile motorcycle sales for the same month has climbed 35.7 percent to 708,349, SIAM said.

In the last financial year, domestic passenger car sales grew by 25.10 per cent to 15,26,787 units from 12,20,475 units in the previous fiscal.

The high growth in the last fiscal was due to the low base figure for the previous fiscal when there was an economic slowdown, SIAM president Pawan Goenka said.

Data showed that the total two-wheeler sales in March 2010 increased by 40.69 percent to 920,133 units compared to 654,010 units in March 2009.

For the month, sales of commercial vehicle rose by 61.16 per cent to 67,362 units against 41,797 units a year ago.

The overall vehicle sales jumped by 37.23 per cent to 12,26,944 units against 8,94,079 units in the same month last year.
