Former foreign secretary and the prime minister's envoy on climate change Shyam Saran will July 1 join the board of global software major Wipro Ltd as an independent director, the IT bellwether said on Friday.

"Saran brings in a unique combination of rich exposure to international policy, vast experience to diverse government functions and deep insight on sustainability. We are sure the company will benefit immensely from his experience, knowledge and wisdom," Wipro chairman Azim Premji said in a statement.

Of the 12-member Wipro board, eight are independent directors.

From the 1970 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Saran held various positions in the government and Indian missions abroad, besides various agencies under the United Nations.

Saran is also an authority on climate change and renewable energy, which will be a key driver for economic growth.

"I have for long admired Wipro as a pioneer of India's leadership in the IT arena. It has a record of being a professionally run company rooted in its values with a strong culture of innovation and a commitment to ecological and sustainable Development," Saran said.

"I look forward to working with Wipro and contribute to its future business strategy and growth," he added.
