Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIE), the global hydraulics business of the IT bellwether, has tied up with Wujin hi-tech Industrial Zone (WIZ) to set up a manufacturing facility at Changzhou city in China's Jiangsu province, the company said Monday.

The Chinese plant will be Wipro's ninth such global facility to manufacture high pressure precision hydraulic cylinders and tipping systems, using state-of-the-art machinery for operations like CNC machining, robotic welding, induction hardening etc.

The company, however, did not specify the investment being made in the new plant.

"We are foraying into China, which is the world's largest market for hydraulic cylinders and related products. We intend to be a preferred partner for the large equipment manufacturers with our latest technology and high quality offerings," WIE chief executive Anurag Behar said in a statement from Shanghai.

The Wipro plant will leverage the nearby industrial areas to develop a strong vendor base for sourcing of raw materials and machined components.

Using the WIZ infrastructure facilities and support services, the company will make its presence felt in China market and expand the plant capacity later to emerge as a global manufacturing hub for the region.

"We will employ local managers, engineers and trained operators to run the high-tech machinery and equipment. A research and development facility will be set up soon to enable the centre design, develop and validate hydraulic cylinders for various industrial applications," Behar said.

The high pressure double acting cylinders will be supplied to manufacturers of excavators, loaders, dozers, dumpers, motor graders and farm equipment. The telescopic cylinders will meet the needs of tippers, dump trucks, refuse vehicles and garbage compactors.

"As an advanced manufacturing base, our five 'pillar' industries are machinery, electronics and IT, renewable energy, advanced materials and bio-pharmaceuticals. Wipro's hydraulic cylinder project is in sync with the plan and direction of industrial development of Changzhou," Wujin Communist Party of China (CPC) secretary-general Shen Ruiqing said.

Korean and Japanese majors such as Hyundai, Komatsu and Terex have invested in Changzhou, while Yuchai Heavy Industries and Liugong Group have set up operations in the WIZ.

"Changzhou has become a destination of choice for engineering in China and we believe Wipro will have a bright future here," Shen added.
