The Gujarat government Tuesday announced a ban on the export of sand from the state.

"This has been done considering the ill effects on underground water, damage to environment and a variety of other reasons," a government press release said.

The ban is a sequel to media reports that ships loaded with thousands of tonnes of river sand from Gujarat were being taken to meet the demands of Kerala's construction industry.
