Sensex, Nifty end flat in lacklustre trade

The Sensex, a benchmark index of Indian equities, Wednesday closed flat despite opening firm on positive global cues.
The 30-share index, after lacklustre throughout the day, closed at 17,462.87 - 50.04 points higher than its previous close.
The NSE (National Stock Exchange) Nifty could not hold on to the 5250 level despite touching a high of 5,255 in opening trade. It closed at 5233.35 points - 11 points higher than its previous close.
The broader indexes, although managed to end in the green, also underperformed. The BSE small cap index rose 0.18 percent and the mid cap index rose 0.13 percent.
