Over 33.35 lakh tonnes of wheat have arrived in grain markets across Haryana, officials said in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

The wheat arrivals in the first 13 days of the procurement season, which started April 1, are higher compared to the corresponding period last year when only 26.45 lakh tonnes of wheat had arrived.

Haryana Food and Supplies Minister Mahender Partap Singh said: "Of the total arrivals, 282 tonnes of wheat have been purchased by traders and the rest of the wheat by various procuring agencies. This year, despite various odds, the wheat arrivals are higher than in the corresponding period last year."

He added: "Karnal district is leading in wheat arrivals with over 4.70 lakh tonnes of wheat, followed by Kaithal from where over 4.34 lakh tonnes of wheat have so far arrived in the mandis (grain markets)."

In neighbouring Punjab too, wheat arrivals were picking up. Over 16.18 lakh tonnes were procured by government agencies and private millers till Monday evening, officials said.

This was nearly four lakh tonnes more as compared to the same date last year.

"Out of the total procurement in all centres of Punjab, government agencies have procured 16.16 lakh tonnes of wheat (over 99 percent). Patiala district with 5.04 lakh tonnes is leading in procurement operations whereas Sangrur with 2.92 lakh tonnes of procurement is at second slot," said the state government spokesperson.
