The Board of Approval (BOA) of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) on Friday cleared seven proposals, including three projects in Andhra Pradesh.

The approved proposals for Andhra Pradesh include two projects for biotech and other related activities at Anantpur and Medak and another at Ranga Reddy district.

An airport-based SEZ by Cochin International Airport Ltd. at Ernakulam in Kerala, a solar SEZ project at Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh and a copper project of the Sterlite Industries at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu are the other three SEZ projects approved by the BOA.

The seventh proposal is for an SEZ for which in-principle approval was given earlier. The BOA approved it formally.

According to a statement issued by the ministry of commerce and industry, the government has till date formally approved setting up 581 SEZs, of which 353 have been notified.

The SEZs have offered direct employment to over 4.89 lakh people, it said.

The BOA also approved seven proposals for grant of co-developer status for SEZs. These include projects in Noida, Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), Kozhikkode (Kerala).
