The government has procured 5.3 lakh tonnes of wheat till March 31, more than twice the figure for the corresponding period last year, it was announced on Thursday.

"The procurement has begun in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. As per data till date, 5.29 lakh tonnes of wheat have been procured in Madhya Pradesh, 1,496 tonnes in Rajasthan and 97 tonnes in Gujarat," said a ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution statement.

"The total wheat procurement as on today stands at 5.3 lakh tonnes. The wheat procurement on March 31 last year was 2.05 lakh tonnes," it said.

The government is expecting a bumper wheat crop this year. But farmers in Punjab, the food bowl of India, are worried over the poor storage facility in warehouses.

Food grains procured earlier are rotting due to lack of proper storage facilities in Punjab.
