A pan-European campaign for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) started Tuesday to encourage, promote and support entrepreneurship.

The European SME Week 2010, initiated for the first time in 2009 by the European Commission Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry, was launched in Brussels.

Over 3 million people are estimated to participate in the some 1261 events and activities that are being organised in 37 countries across Europe. It will showcase the support available to business at the European, national, regional and local level.

During the week, the European Commission will showcase the support available to business at the European, national, regional and local in the participating countries.

Existing entrepreneurs, potential entrepreneurs, young people, business organizations, support providers, public authorities and educational institutions can get involved in European SME Week.

Topics during European SME Week include "start-ups," "corporate social responsibility" and "tax and legal issues" as well as "female entrepreneurship," "social economy" and other fields essential to running SMEs.
