After almost surviving bankruptcy in 2008 and then making a strong comeback last year, Air Canada was voted as the best airline in North America in a worldwide survey released Thursday.

In the annual survey of more than 17 million air travellers by independent research firm Skytrax between July 2009 and April 2010, Air Canada was rated the 'Best in North America,' it was announced at the Skytrax World Airline Awards ceremony in German Thursday.

"It is an honour to once again be acknowledged by air travelers around the world as the best airline in North America.'' said Air Canada CEO Calin Rovinescu in his reaction to the survey's findings.

"This most recent poll of 17 million airline passengers underscores our progress in providing our customers with a world class travel experience and an industry leading product.

"I am incredibly proud of our employees whose dedication and professionalism are recognized by this prestigious award. In effect passengers are recognizing the culture change underway at Air Canada and the excellent employee brand that has developed,'' the airline boss added.

A benchmark for the aviation sector, the survey takes in consideration various parameters to know passenger satisfaction levels of airlines globally.

Last year also, it was awarded by the aviation industry as the 'Best Airline in North America,' and the 'Best North American Airline for International Travel. Air Canada is the country's national carrier, with operations to 170 destinations around the world. It is the world's 13th biggest airline.
