An alliance of aircraft manufacturers in Brazil, the Brazilian Alliance for Aviation Biofuels (Abraba), will promote "development and certification of sustainable biofuel" for use in air transport.

The 10-member group arrived at the decision based on cost of fuel and protecting the environment, aircraft manufacturer Embraer, one of the top aircraft producing companies in the world said Monday.

The alliance also spoke about the country's leadership in biofuel production. Brazil leads the globe in exports of ethanol made from sugarcane.

The Abraba alliance includes airlines like TAM, Gol, Azul and Trip, sugar industry group Unica, Algae Biotecnologia, Amyris Brasil and the AIAB association representing Brazil's aerospace sector.

Civil aviation accounts for roughly two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to data from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
