A Chinese technology company says that "Made in China" products are being counterfeited overseas.

Some Chinese firms have not protected their trademarks and copyrights, resulting in huge economic loss due to theft of patented technology in the local and overseas markets, said Fang Zhen, marketing manager of Crastal Technology Co in Guangdong province.

Global Times quoted Fang as saying that he discovered that an electronic pot sold in US markets closely resembles one that his company manufactures.

"You can barely tell the difference. The only difference is the producer," Fang said Monday on the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day.

Feng Jinyue, director of regulations for Shenzhen Customs, said businesses should register their patents to avoid further counterfeiting.

By doing so, customs could seize the counterfeited products before they go to the market.

"If enterprises don't register their products with customs, we can do nothing to protect them," said Li Xuejun, director of the intellectual property rights department of customs.
