The arrival of international tourists in Spain rose by 3.2 percent last month to 3.5 million, the biggest monthly increase since May 2008, the industry ministry said in Madrid.

The figure shows a recovery with respect to data provided in recent months by the ministry's Tourism Studies Institute.

In February, tourist arrivals fell by 1.5 percent.

The survey published Thursday also notes that during 2009 tourist arrivals declined by 8.7 percent.

The largest number of tourists - 22 percent of the total - came from Britain, but it registered the only decline among the main tourist-sending markets.

The airports, used by almost 80 percent of Spain's visitors, were the access route that grew most, 3.3 percent, while roads, by which 688,000 tourists entered the country, showed an increase of 2 percent as the route for tourist arrivals.
