Identifying the uniqueness of handicraft sector, Secretary, Textiles, Zohra Chatterji Monday said that this sector has high export potential, low capital investment and immense scope for increasing job opportunities.

Inaugurating the the four-day-long Asia's largest Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (Spring) 2014, being organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), at India Expo Centre and Mart, Greater Noida, Chatterji said, "Handicrafts is an important segment of the Indian society both from economic and social point of views."

"The uniqueness of this sector is that it has high export potential, low capital investment and immense scope for increasing job opportunities particularly or economically and socially backward sections of the society beside many other sectors connected with the production and exports of handicrafts," she said.

"EPCH may consider reinventing the format of the fair by introducing a special section on the highlights of the fair so that buyers may know as to what is new in the fair and accordingly they plan their visit. How this can be achieved in the best possible manner is for EPCH to decide in consultation with its exhibiting companies," she added.

The Secreetary Textiles further mentioned that Skill Development has always been one of the top priorities of the Ministry and EPCH has been entrusted to form the Handicrafts and Carpet Sector Skill Council to bridge the skill gap that is seriously affecting the Handicrafts and Carpet sector.

Earlier in his welcome address, Lekhraj Maheshwari, Chairman, EPCH informed that the Council, as usual has been very pro-active in the field of developing awareness amongst the exporting community about all statutory, non-statutory, social compliance and regulations imposed by many importing countries in the world for handicrafts products.

In this direction, suitable publication has been brought out for the guidance of the exporters. In respect of wood products, EPCH has introduced the scheme of "Vriksh" for certification.

H.E. Maria Clemencia Rodriguez De Santos, First Lady of Republic of Colombia, launched the facility of "Mobile Application of IHGF", an EPCH initiative, for the ease of the visiting buyers to find out products and companies of their interest.

This facility can be accessed on Smart Phones through Google Play and App Store on http://epch.in/mobile Information on Company-wise exhibitors, Product-wise exhibitors, fair facilities, free shuttle, hotels, helplines about International airlines, Indian Railways, National Bus Transportation etc. can be viewed and accessed by the buyers holding smart phones.

Monica De Greiff Lindo, President of Bogota Chambers of Commerce and Aida Vivian Lechter De Furmansky, General Manager of Artesanias De Colombia and S.S. Gupta, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) were also present and graced the occasion.

Sharad Bansal, President of IHGF Spring 2014 Reception Committee said that the Handicrafts Fair this year has more than 2650 exhibitors including 900 permanent marts, drawn from various regions and states of India displaying a very wide variety of Handicrafts at this show. Out of total 2650 exhibitors, 587 are from Central region, 143 eastern region, 519 from Northern region, 402 from North-West (Rajasthan), 43 from Southern region and 46 from Western region.

Handicrafts exports registered an increase of 38.5 percent in Rupee terms and 22.15 percent in dollar terms during 2012-13 over the previous year. The exports during first 10 months of the current fiscal is Rs. 16,786.24 crores. Export target of Rs. 24,500 crores during 2013-14 will be surpassed, elaborated by Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director of EPCH.
