Amid demand for a census on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), state-run National Small Industries Co (NSIC) has created an e-database to help the country's 12.8 million units enhance their businesses.

Having registered about three lakh MSMEs within a week of its launch early this month, NSIC is hoping to reach out to at least five million units soon.

"We have created the e-database as a platform for MSMEs to connect with buyers not only in India, but also abroad. Potentials buyers can access information and also develop business relations," NSIC Chairman and Managing Director H P Kumar said.

The initiative comes amid demand from the industry that a database should be created for providing a frame for tracking the future growth and development of the sector.

"Our target is to get 30,000-40,000 hits per day and get five million MSME units registered with us," Kumar said.

Early this month, the Economic Survey had suggested the creation of an internet-enabled data - an information system to help the units market their goods and services across India and the world.
