Central Sales Tax (CST) not brought down to 2 percent: report

Staff Reporter | 19 Apr, 2008
A recent media report has said that Knitwear Club and Punjab Tax Bar Association members have expressed resentment that central sales tax (CST) has not been brought down from 3 percent to 2 percent.

As per the association, the CST should have been brought down on April 1 by the central government. Knitwear Club President Vinod Thaper also wrote to Chief Minister Punjab Parkash Singh Badal in this regard.

The report while quoting Ashok Juneja, President of Punjab Tax Bar Association, added that while introducing VAT in India, it was promised that CST will be reduced by 1 percent every year, and this year it was to be reduced to 2 percent.

The Central government should immediately notify for charging value added tax (VAT) at the rate of 2 percent, otherwise it will be difficult to get refund once it is charged to the purchasers, he added.

CST

CST continues to be 2% till the final notification is not issued by GOI through respective states. CST has not been reduced as Centre and states have not agreed on compensation formulae to offset the CST loss to states esp industrialised states like TN, MAH who have more inter-state trade. CST will be 2% most likely from prospective date only i.e date from when notification is issued. Till that time CST remains 3%.It is one more unkept promise of government.
