Anand Choudhary | 15 Apr, 2008
Located on the Pacific coast of South America, Peru is the third largest country in the region. It is bordered by Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and Chile.

It has a population of around 25 million people. India exports goods worth Rs 56,836.89 Lacs to Peru while it imports Goods worth Rs 58,097.02 lacs from their.

So, today on Face to Face I have with me Carlos A. Yrigoyen the acting high commissioner of Peru in India. Sir, it's a pleasure to have you on Face to Face. I should begin with the interview...

Q1) What are the major goods and commodities that Peru exports to India?

Ans) Peru mainly exports copper, gold, zinc, crude petroleum and petroleum products, coffee, potatoes, asparagus, textiles, guinea pigs not only to India but these are the major Peruvian exports.

Q2) What are the things that India exports to Peru?

ans) India exports a wide diversity of goods to Peru like drugs & pharmaceuticals, organic and inorganic chemicals, two wheelers / three wheelers & their parts, automobile parts, rubber tyres, yarns, textile & ready made garments, electrical and other machinery, iron and steel products, etc. On the other hand, the main imports from Peru are minerals and concentrates, fish meal, rough silver, among others.

Q3) How's the market in Peru and how strong is your economy?

Ans) The Peruvian market is very customer oriented. Though Peruvian market has its share of indigenous products as we are a very liberalized economy so you can find a lot of imported products in the markets in Peru. Imported goods constitute a major chunk of the market. Due to a liberalised economy since the early 1990s, international quality goods as well as foreign collaborations exist in all product categories. Besides,we are a strong economy.

Q4) What does it take being an investor, to sustain your brand in the Peruvian market? I mean if you want to export your goods to Peru or are looking for a joint venture then what are the goods or commodities you should look forward to export to Peru?

Ans) You can export anything that's permitted by our govt. However, I don't have The list with me right now. But being a liberal economy you can export literally a large number of things but they need to have a market for it. One can find most international brands, which makes it a highly competitive market. Hence, in order to succeed, there is need to sustained research work, including market surveys, market trends of specific products, information on competitors and similar products, etc through frequent visits as well as possible hiring of local consultants/partners.

Q5)According to you what needs to be done to promote trade. I mean how can we bring the businessmen from both the countries closer so that they can talk directly?

Ans) I believe that to promote a better knowledge of our common interests and values, people and businessmen should meet more frequently. We strongly believe in the importance of cultural exchanges.

Q6) So do you think that more seminars and conferences between India and Peru should be held where there can be greater people to people contacts?

Ans) Yes, it should be.

Q7)Which are the goods and commodities that Peru will like to import from India in future?

Ans) I guess it may be in the field of automobiles, pharma, garments, auto parts and components among others.

Q8)How do see the future of trade between India and Peru?

Ans) Well, the future of trade between the two countries seem to be on the right track.

OK Sir, So, I will like to end the interview on this positive note. Thank you very much for coming on Face to face. It was a pleasure talking to you.
