Renault India on Thursday launched its compact hatchback "KWID" priced at Rs.2.56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The vehicle is manufactured using 98 percent local parts.

According to the company, this is the first international launch of KWID which reflects the importance of the Indian market in Renault’s global expansion plans.

"With Renault KWID, we offer our customers the best compact hatchback which has been designed and developed by Renault’s global teams including India, making it a truly international car," Sumit Sawhney, chief executive and managing director, Renault India was quoted in a statement.

The Indian subsidiary of the French automaker stated that Renault KWID has achieved a manufacturing localisation of 98 percent and claimed a mileage of 25.17 kms per liter for the petrol powered car.

The company elaborated that the new vehicle's design has been inspired by sports utility vehicle (SUV) and that it incorporates cutting-edge technologies like a seven inch touch screen, media navigation system, digital instrument cluster and one touch lane-change indicator, among others.

The car is powered by a three cylinder 0.8 litre smart control efficiency (SCe) petrol 4-valve-per-cylinder "DOHC" engine.

As per the company, the engine has been coupled to a perfectly optimised transmission, which work in harmony to provide the best-in-class fuel efficiency.

The new vehicle carries a 50,000-km or two-year maintenance policy. The company is also offering a complimentary road side assistance for two years.

With the launch, Renault will be entering the mini car segment which accounts for nearly 25 percent of the total automobile sales volumes.

The statement cited that the timing of the KWID launch is perfect, as the auto sector is slowly bouncing back and the economy is also gradually stabilising.

"The compelling price makes Renault KWID an irresistible offering," the statement added.

Currently, the company offers six vehicles -- Fluence, SUV Koleos, Pulse, SUV Duster, Scala and MPV Lodgy.
