Carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Tuesday launched the Ciaz SHVS - India's first smart hybrid diesel vehicle equipped with modern technologies - at prices starting from Rs.8.23 lakh.

"Through Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki), we are deploying technology to benefit the customer and the environment, both at the same time. Brand Ciaz has been one the major success stories for Maruti Suzuki in the past one year," managing director and CEO, Kenichi Ayukawa said in a statement.

The car is equipped with smart hybrid features including idle engine start/stop, power assist and brake energy regeneration among others.

According to the company, the car's hybrid version is in accordance with the Indian government's FAME programme which aims to promote hybrid and electric vehicles in the country.

"By offering support through the FAME program, the government has ensured that hybrid technology, while being clean and customer friendly, also becomes more attractive and accessible," said Ayukawa.

The car comes in five variants and is priced between Rs.8.23 lakh to Rs.10.17 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
