Domestic cars sales rose 3.14 percent in January and stood at 169,300 units from 164,149 units in the corresponding month of last year, industry data showed Tuesday.

Data furnished by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed that utility vehicles' sales grew by 6.30 percent at 48,681 units from 45,797 units in the corresponding month of 2014.

However, van sales in the month under review were down 6.93 percent at 12,638 units from 13,579 units sold in January 2014.

Total passenger vehicle sales which includes, cars, utility vehicles and vans in the month under review increased by 3.17 percent at 230,619 units from an off-take of 223,525 units in January 2014.

For last month, SIAM reported an increase of 36.81 percent in sales of heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) which are a key indicator of economic activity. Sales stood at 21,363 units from 15,615 units in the corresponding month of last year.

Total two-wheeler sales in the month under review rose 1.07 percent at 1,327,957 units from 1,313,958 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.

However, total motorcycle sales decreased by 5.85 percent at 868,507 units from 922,485 units sold in January last year.

Scooter segment sales zoomed 25.30 percent at 404,919 units from 323,162 units sold in the corresponding period of last year.

Three-wheeler sales were up by 8.92 units at 39,325 from 36,105 units sold in January 2014.

Total exports for the month under review went up by 6.78 percent at 266,075 units from 249,170 units being shipped out in the corresponding month of last year.

Total vehicle sales in January gained 1.66 percent at 1,650,382 units from 1,623,429 units sold in January last year.
