Apparel exporters optimistic about growth this year

Staff Reporter | 19 Jul, 2008
The third day of the India International Garment Fair saw a steady stream of buyers and visitor. Around 175 overseas buyers and 134 buying agents visited the fair today. On the first two days around 300 overseas buyers and 200 buying agents have already visited the fair.

Devender Singh, VP, Karstadt Ouelle, visited the fair along with her team. She was very optimistic about India’s exports this year and felt that exports this year are not just on a recovery path but in fact may fair better than the pre rupee - appreciation days.

This is because the industry has been able to streamline further and improve its competitiveness. Her company plans to increase its sourcing from India, which they see as a good sourcing destination, matching in competitiveness to China, if not more.

It is important to note that India’s exports of readymade garments had  recorded a growth of 5.6% during 2007-08, which has been considered as modest by the industry, given the double digit growth experienced in the past. The industry needs to record growth of over 15% in the coming years to meet the target of US$ 25 bn by the end of the Eleventh Plan period.

Jagdish Tytler, Congress MP and S B Mohapatra, Former Secretary, Ministry of Textiles were among the other dignitaries who visited the show today.

The fashion shows being organized during all the days of the fair have also generated good response. Leading Garment exporters like Jyoty Apparels, Madhubani Corporation, Manvi Impex, Enfin Exports, Nancy Kraft Limited, Maharana Of India, Aman Exports Limited and Impex V have showcased their summer collection for Spring Summer 2009.

Tomorrow, on the last day of the Fair, awards for best displays will be announced. Also, a delegation from Boswania, led by High Commissioner of Boswania will be visiting the fair.
